07 February 2017 / Categories: News CM2000 funded Telephone Befriending Service helps combat loneliness Loneliness in later life hit the headlines at the beginning of the year using research from Age UK to highlight that 500,000 over the age of 60 usually go at least five or six days a week without seeing or speaking to anyone at all. Cross-national evidence suggests that loneliness in later life runs deeper in England than in other developed countries. According to the research there are over 14,000 lonely older people in the Birmingham area. CM2000’s specialist visit verification software is used widely across older adult homecare services to ensure care visits take place when scheduled and protect against missed visits. The company undertakes a wide range of corporate and social responsibility projects, but one of the closest to home is its financial support for Age Concern Birmingham’s Telephone Befriending Service. The service is aimed at people facing social isolation and provides regular telephone calls and encouragement to get out the house and involved in suitable activities. Becky Smith, Director of Operations and Development at Age Concern Birmingham, said “The funding that we receive from CM2000 allows us to offer a much needed telephone befriending service in the North of Birmingham. This service is delivered through volunteers and supports older people who are at risk of isolation, offering regular contact and for many a life line. We are so grateful to CM2000 for funding this much needed service”. One of the users told us how the service has helped them “I appreciate the Befriending service because they took the trouble to find someone who I had something in common with. I don’t find it easy to mix with people but I now feel that somebody cares about me.” Age Concern Birmingham are always looking for volunteers for the Telephone Befriending Service and the wide range of services they offer to meet the needs of local older people.
